I'm reading stories about the conquest of the Old West, during the 19th century. I propose that we share here some of the most infamous legends of this period. Here is my first one :

Gunfight at Hide Park

This true story takes place in Newton, Kansas. In 1871, this town is on the Chisholm Trail, which is taken by ranchers to bring their cattle to the butcheries in the North. The Santa Fe railroad is still under construction and Newton will become a head of this railroad in 1872.

Billy Bailey is hired as Special Policeman during the elections in the town to help keep order. Coming from Texas, he is known by cowboys who pass through the town. We don't know more on him. On August 11, 1871, he has an argument in the Red Front Saloon with Mike McCluskey, a gambler who works as night policeman on the railroad works. They come to blows and McCluskey knocks Bailey outside the saloon. McCluskey is armed and shoots at the lawman, hitting him in the chest. Bailey dies the next day.

McCluskey fled the town for few days, to avoiding the arrest. Some months before, he was already arrested for have garroted a man to the death, but charges was dismissed. On August 19, he wants to comes back into town and pleads the self-defense, fearing for his life : during three previous gunfights, Bailey had already killed two men.

Arriving into town at night, McCluskie goes to the Tuttles Dance Hall, located in a part of the town named "Hide Park". He is accompanied by two friends, Jim Martin and James Riley. Then, three cowboys enter the saloon and see him : Billy Garrett, Henry Kearnes and Jim Wilkerson are all three friends of Bailey. Nothing occurs until Hugh Anderson, a fourth cowboy, also entered and threat McCluskey of a coward.

Jim Martin try to prevent the fight, but it's to late: Anderson shoots at McCluskey several times, killing him. Kearns, Garrett and Wilkerson also begin to fire. Martin is hit in the neck and dies. Riley, who stayed near the doors, returns fire. He is known to wear a pair of twin Colt revolvers at all times. Despite the smoke in the room, he hits seven men, in particular Garrett and Kearns who die and Anderson and Wilkerson who are injured.

His two weapons empty, Riley fled away and will never be seen again. Anderson will be searched for the murder of McCluskey and located by the gambler's brother, Arthur McCluskey, in Texas on July 4, 1873. Several shoots is exchanged between opponents, and each one comes to fight with knives. No one of them will survive.

Dear l'Ancien,

(What is your question ?  this was my first reply)

Do you prefer to share famous stories or to try to understand what in their "short" history make the USA special ?

I believe it would be interesting if we can share our views or discuss with American people.

Cheers,

Aeth
